The Art of Filmmaking 101

Welcome to the introductory workshop from MBJ Media Services entitled The Art of Filmmaking 101. This workshop was designed for the beginning filmmaker who wants a comprehensive overview of the filmmaking process, the cameras of choice will be cell phones, tablets and DSLR cameras. The course starts with a brief history of the film industry, from its humble beginnings to its planet dominating contemporary existence in the 21st century. From there you will learn about the early equipment which was invented and developed to accommodate this new art form. Next you will learn the basics of cinematography from frame composition, the rule of thirds, depth of field, camera movement, Dutch tilts, and many other camera techniques. Then you will be shown the wonderful world of lighting, both natural lighting and artificial lighting. You will learn basic 2 and 3 point lighting, which is the basis for all lighting set-ups in filmmaking. Next you will learn how to use basic grip equipment to change and control the lighting. Grip equipment such as flags, dot & fingers, scrims, cucoloris’, and even tree branches will be used for instruction on how to alter the lighting and create atmosphere in your shots. You will then learn about the use of sound recording equipment and sound effects to enhance your films. Finally you will get a brief lesson on story development, which is the basis for any great film.
